Delicious RAM
Lenin, my web server, was in dire need of a RAM upgrade, so I got him one, just because I care. I don't know if it will make much of a difference to the web services but I've been using it as a central BitTorrent download machine for the house and I know that will be improved. The poor thing's been running with 4mb free RAM for weeks. I blame Azureus and tendency to gobble up system resources, even after I tried to force it into the lowest possible profile (uTorrent is my personal choice, but unfortunately that only comes in Windows flavour).
For those interested, Lenin is an old PC I had from back in 2000. He long ago became redundant so I've put him to work doing all kinds of experimental things. A PC like this is definitely a case in favour of Linux as a server OS; I had it running Windows 98 (okay so obviously thats not a good comparison, but it was the highest I could go) and the switch to Debian Sarge was like adding rocket boosters to it. Running just 128MB of RAM and an old Celeron for the past half-a-year, Lenin has met and exceeded my expectations of him. Plus, he's been a great experiment in running and managing a Linux server. It hasn't always been easy, but it has been very fun. Here's to you, old boy!
